A few weeks ago my husband, business partner Candace, and I were walking through a few neighborhoods in the Evergreen district with our dogs. The trees were still bare, no kids running around, and even the typically busier East/West streets of Union, Madison, and Poplar were just quiet. Sure, it’s still winter but on that day the temps were in the low 50’s and mild enough to make do outdoors with a light jacket. Where were all the people taking advantage of the break from the frosts we’ve been having? After being shuttered inside my home, car, office, or inside houses I’ve shown – I wanted to engage with the scenery and general public. Isn’t living in your city or town more intrinsically rewarding when the place is alive and things are “going on?”Life’s funny that way. Even if we don’t know the people around us we can still enjoy and want their company.
Anyway, the whole day was enough to really make you want Spring to make an early appearance—for good. When it finally does come around it’s gorgeous in Midtown, too! The combination of architecture, streets alive with walkers, shoppers, diners, and gas guzzlers, and the color on display from the flowering vegetation (the dogwoods are my fav) are easy to appreciate. My trusty source (the Memphis Flyer) gives me more options to spend my hard earned free time on too but that does me no good. It’s still early February.
I found some hope that day though. After being let down by the lack of doggies and dog owners unaware of the rare winter day at Overton Park, we stopped in at Fresh Slices for some grub and found signs of life! The place is usually filled at lunchtime and for good reason. That day was no different. We did some more sightseeing around town and it turned out that lots of people had the same idea I did about the day. They just went about it differently by “getting out” but staying indoors at the local restaurants, cafes, and boutiques.
I was eventually encouraged, and I have some encouragement for you too: enjoy the place where you live. Get out, even if you have to stay in. At the very least you can benefit from the feeling of being around others. If you haven’t done so in a while then trust me, it’s rewarding. If your career has you typically isolated for most of the day and you’ve been feeling that way even through the weekend then I’m talking to you. There’s tons of small, inexpensive things to go out and enjoy here in Memphis. You can go meet some nice people in your town and form some new relationships.
That way when Spring rolls around you’ll have new friends to enjoy this new year with!
